The two needles on their first day, September 29, 2026: market mood 73, Greed; Hashpoint structural 37, Fear. Illustration of the dashboard gauge.

Today the Hashpoint dashboard added a new instrument: the Hashpoint Fear & Greed Meter, two gauges side by side, each with its own needle on the same 0-to-100 scale. On its first day, September 29, the needles disagreed by 36 points. The first, market mood, read 73: Greed. The second, the needle the dashboard calls Hashpoint structural, read 37: Fear.

The crowd is in Greed while the capital data sits in Fear.

This edition introduces the meter and asks what a gap like this one has meant before. The record answers more clearly than I expected, and it cuts against the easy reading.

## Two needles, two questions

Market mood at 73 (Greed) against Hashpoint structural at 37 (Fear), September 29, 2026.

Market mood is the Crypto Fear & Greed Index that alternative.me has published every day since February 2018. It blends price volatility, momentum and volume, social media activity, Bitcoin's dominance and search interest into one number from 0 to 100. It answers one question: how does the crowd feel this week? Over the past year it has answered with everything from 5, on February 23, to 78, on September 22.

Hashpoint structural answers a different question: where do valuation and capital sit against their own past? The dashboard builds it from four readings.

1. MVRV, the market's value against the price every coin last moved at.

2. Where the daily close sits inside the power-law band, between the floor and the top band.

3. The 30-day price return.

4. Growth in realized cap over 90 days, the measure of new money that actually settled on chain.

The gauge ranks each reading against every earlier day of its own history and averages the four ranks. A reading of 37 means today's data, taken together, sits near the 37th percentile of everything that came before it. The dashboard scores each day only against the days before it, so the history carries no hindsight. The series runs back to July 2012.

The two gauges move at different speeds by design. Market mood reacts to last week's price. Three of the four structural readings change over months. A bounce can lift the crowd in a fortnight. The structure needs price to hold its ground and money to arrive behind it.

## Why the structure reads Fear

On September 28, the four readings stood at 41 for MVRV, 16 for band position, 59 for the 30-day return and 31 for realized cap growth.

The band position does most of the damage. Bitcoin closed at $83,457, 1.29 times the power-law floor of $64,639 and 0.54 times the median of $153,903. The floor rises every day, so a price that looked rich in 2021 looks low today. Only 16 percent of prior days sat lower in the band.

Realized cap grew 1.2 percent over the past 90 days, a 31st-percentile pace. The 30-day return, from $78,234 to $83,457, is the only reading above the middle of its range, and it fades faster than any of the others.

## Eight and a half months in Fear

The structural gauge last touched Neutral, a reading of 47, on January 14, 2026. It has sat below that line for 257 days, and below Greed for 336 days, since late October 2025. It bottomed at 10 in June, the same month MVRV made its cycle low of 1.10.

![fear and greed all panel](https://bitcoinhashpoint.com/content/panels/2026-09-29-long-game/fear-and-greed-all-951d7012.png)

Market mood since 2018 and Hashpoint structural since 2012, with Bitcoin on a log scale.

The long view puts that stretch in context. Every bear market on record kept the structure below 47 for a long season before it turned.

| Bear market | Days below 47 before the next Greed reading | Gauge low |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 2014 to 2016 | 820 | 4, January 2015 |
| 2018 to 2019 | 256 | 11, December 2018 |
| 2022 to 2023 | 554 | 5, November 2022 |
| 2025 to 2026 | 257 so far | 10, June 2026 |

The current wait now matches the 2018 to 2019 bear almost to the day. It still runs well short of the other two.

The peaks tell their own story. The gauge topped at 87 in April 2013, 94 in December 2017 and 93 in February 2021. This cycle it peaked at 78 in December 2024. On October 6, 2025, the day Bitcoin set its record close of $124,720, it read only 67. Each cycle's excess has run a little cooler than the last.

## What the gap has meant before

Market mood has run 30 points or more above the structure five times since 2018, not counting today. Here is every episode.

| Gap opened | Mood / structure | BTC | Days | 180 days later | Worst close in 180 days | Structure reached Greed |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Feb 18, 2019 | 63 / 29 | $3,867 | 7 | +164% | -4% | May 11, 2019 |
| Mar 21, 2019 | 62 / 28 | $3,973 | 1 | +156% | -2% | May 11, 2019 |
| Sep 2, 2020 | 83 / 51 | $11,395 | 2 | +336% | -11% | Oct 12, 2020 |
| Feb 16, 2023 | 62 / 31 | $23,516 | 1 | +24% | -14% | No |
| Aug 31, 2023 | 52 / 22 | $25,932 | 1 | +120% | -3% | Nov 9, 2023 |
| Aug 20, 2026 | 62 / 29 | $73,012 | 41, still open | open | open | not yet |

The record reads plainly. Every earlier gap opened within a year of a major low. Every one ended with Bitcoin higher 180 days later, by 24 percent at the least, and the deepest dip along the way came to 14 percent. In four of the five, the structure crossed into Greed within six months. The crowd was early, not wrong. The capital followed the mood.

![Every earlier time the mood ran 30 points or more above the structure, and where Bitcoin stood 180 days later. The August 2026 gap was still open on September 29.](https://bitcoinhashpoint.com/content/art/2026-09-29-long-game/fg-gap-episodes-8ed1c582-1600.jpg)

Every earlier time the mood ran 30 points or more above the structure, and where Bitcoin stood 180 days later. The August 2026 gap was still open on September 29.

Five episodes make a thin record, and three of them lasted a single day. Hold the conclusion loosely.

One number separates today from all five. None of them lasted longer than a week. Each gap closed because price rose and pulled the structure up behind it. This gap opened on August 20 and has held for 41 days. Bitcoin gained 11.3 percent in its first 30 days, and the structure still did not follow. Nothing in the record looks like this, which makes it the most important fact on the gauge and the one the record cannot interpret for us.

## The flip price

Three of the four structural readings move with price. So one Bitcoin price, with realized cap held where it stands, would carry the gauge across each line.

| Structure reads | BTC price | vs Sept 28 close | vs floor | vs median |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 47, Neutral | $93,493 | 1.12x | 1.45x | 0.61x |
| 55, Greed | $103,557 | 1.24x | 1.60x | 0.67x |
| 76, Extreme Greed | $204,222 | 2.45x | 3.16x | 1.33x |

At $103,557 the structure would agree with the crowd. That price sits 24 percent above the September 28 close.

Capital cannot do that job alone at today's price. Feed the fastest 90-day realized cap growth on record into today's gauge and it reads 54, one point short of Greed. At $83,457, price has to lead. Realized cap growth then shows how much money came in behind it.

## Flips that failed

A crossing into Greed has not always marked a turn. Since 2012 the gauge has crossed 55 after a long wait eleven times. Six of those crossings held for more than a month. Five faded inside a month, and two of the five came inside bear markets and failed badly.

| Flip | BTC | Lasted | 180 days later |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| July 24, 2018 | $8,386 | 5 days | -58% |
| March 25, 2022 | $44,332 | 12 days | -58% |

Both came within eight months of a cycle top, while the excess of the prior run still unwound. The other three short flips, in February 2020, May 2020 and November 2023, gave way to large gains within a year.

The flips that held did not promise a smooth ride either. All six entries from 2013 to 2020 stood higher a year later, by 21 percent at the least, and every one of them suffered a drawdown of 30 to 71 percent inside that year. The May 2019 entry gained 64 percent in 90 days, then gave back 62 percent from its peak in the March 2020 crash.

So a flip carries two tests: a crossing of 55, and a month above it.

## What to watch

The dashboard shows each of these the day it happens, and none of them needs a date.

1. Bitcoin at $93,493. The structure reaches Neutral for the first time since January 14.

2. Bitcoin at $103,557. The structure reads Greed and agrees with the crowd.

3. Thirty days above 55. The two flips that failed inside bear markets lasted 5 and 12 days.

4. Realized cap growth, now at the 31st percentile, climbing past the middle of its range. That is new money, the one input a rally cannot manufacture.

5. The other exit: market mood falling back under 47 with the structure unmoved. That closes the gap from the top, and it would say the crowd ran ahead alone.

## The Hashpoint read

The crowd is in Greed while the capital data sits in Fear. Instinct says trust the capital data and fade the crowd. The record says otherwise. Five times since 2018 the crowd ran 30 points ahead of the structure, and five times Bitcoin stood higher six months later, with the structure catching up in four of them. The crowd tends to see a turn before the balance sheet can confirm it.

What the record cannot settle is duration. Every earlier gap closed within a week. This one has held for 41 days, with Bitcoin low in its band and new capital arriving at a 31st-percentile pace. The line that settles it sits at $103,557. Until price gets there, the crowd holds an opinion and the structure holds its ground.

*Data: Hashpoint dashboard Fear & Greed series as of September 29, 2026. Market mood: the Crypto Fear & Greed Index by alternative.me, daily since February 1, 2018. Hashpoint structural: computed on the Hashpoint box from Coin Metrics MVRV and realized cap, the dashboard's power-law bands, and the dashboard's daily closing prices, which splice two exchange feeds at July 20, 2015. Each structural reading ranks against prior days only; the full history reflects today's data vintage, and readings before mid-2017 rest on MVRV and realized cap growth alone, including the 2015 low of 4. Gap episodes: market mood 30 or more points above the structure, merged across breaks of up to seven days. Flip prices hold realized cap and its 90-day growth at September 28 values. Structural reads, not forecasts. Nothing here is investment advice.*
