# The Hashpoint for October 17, 2026

*October 17, 2026, Dennis W. Davis*

> Strategy holds STRC at 12 percent and it drops $1.81

*Bitcoin Hashpoint, October 17, 2026*

Strategy set STRC's November coupon on Friday morning at 12.00%, unchanged, and by the close the preferred had fallen $1.81 to $97.72. The discount now reads $2.28, nearly five times Thursday's forty-seven cents and the widest since September 16. That close breaks the $99.50 line this publication named on Wednesday, with the ten-year at 5.09%, inside the condition the marker set. Strategy's common fell 9.56% to $136.83 in the first session after MSCI dated its index removal. Bitcoin closed at $81,500, down 0.77%, which reads 1.2406 times the power-law floor of $65,692 and 0.5211 times the median of $156,409.

## STRC and Strategy

The order of events carries the story. Strategy's October 16 filing declares $1.00 a share for November, the 12.00% rate in force since July 1, paid daily from November 2 if common holders approve the schedule on October 28. The company made that call against Thursday's $99.53 close. Friday carried the market $1.81 away from it, and the coupon cannot answer until the December declaration.

Hashpoint's own analysis holds that a monthly repricing schedule leaves the largest institutional bid impaired longer than a real-time rate would. Friday supplied the cleanest single-session example of that lag on record here. It also cost the escalation half of the argument a round: the box's rule reads November at 12.25%, a structural reading of the rule, and the company held 12.00%.

The preferred has stopped ignoring its issuer. On September 21 the common ran 9.47% and STRC moved twenty-seven cents, a ratio near 35 to 1. Friday the common lost 9.56% and the preferred lost 1.82%, roughly 5 to 1. The equity window funds the buyback, so a cut to the common cuts the repair budget. STRK fell 3.5% to $71.24 in the same session.

The box reads issuance as closed, after six sessions at marginal. Effective yield runs 12.28%, with 107 sessions and 156 calendar days below par since May 14; the next fifty-cent payment falls October 31. Strategy filed no purchase or sale in twenty-four hours. Holdings read 848,250 coins at a stated $75,444, a $69.13 billion position carrying a $5.14 billion cushion.

STRC closed at $97.72, $2.28 under par, the widest discount since September 16, hours after Strategy held the November rate at 12.00%.

![strategy purchases panel](https://bitcoinhashpoint.com/content/panels/2026-10-17/strategy-purchases-b35a9b9b.png)

Strategy holds 848,250 coins at a stated $75,444, a cushion of $6,056 a coin at Friday's close.

## Macro and yields

The rate did not cause Friday. The ten-year reads 5.09%, about 14 basis points lower on the week, the two-year 4.72%, the thirty-year 5.43%, and the real yield between 2.74% and 2.77%. The dollar index slipped to 101.6, a two-week low.

The damage ran through equities and credit. The Nasdaq fell 2.14% and 4.5% on the week, its worst since late June, and the VIX rose 21% to 19.99. Goldman Sachs counts AI-related high-yield spreads 25 basis points wider this week. Brent touched $110. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh said "I don't prejudge meetings," and October hike odds sit near 15%. No releases land today.

The crowd shrugged. Market mood, the Crypto Fear and Greed Index from https://www.google.com/url?q=http://alternative.me&source=gmail&ust=1792318969712000&sa=E, rose to 63 in Greed from 53, while the Hashpoint structural composite reads 37 in Fear, a 26-point gap.

![macro context with btc price panel](https://bitcoinhashpoint.com/content/panels/2026-10-17/macro-context-with-btc-price-07750619.png)

The ten-year read 5.09% and the dollar index 101.6 while the Nasdaq lost 2.14% and Brent touched $110.

![fear and greed panel](https://bitcoinhashpoint.com/content/panels/2026-10-17/fear-and-greed-ef3242d4.png)

Market mood reads 63 in Greed against a structural 37 in Fear, a 26-point gap.

## ETF flows and supply pressure

The funds redeemed $82.4 million on Friday, IBIT $71.8 million of it and FBTC $10.6 million, with no fund creating. The week closes $228.4 million negative, with Tuesday's $175.7 million the only real creation. Cumulative net flow falls to roughly $56.95 billion.

Supply pressure rose to 2.4133 from 2.1251, and that rise owes nothing to fresh buying. The thirty-day window dropped September 16's $295.9 million redemption. Exchange balances read 2,676,910 coins on October 15 after a thirty-day drain of 40,549.

![spot etf daily net flows aggregate panel](https://bitcoinhashpoint.com/content/panels/2026-10-17/spot-etf-daily-net-flows-aggregate-2047f3c9.png)

The funds redeemed $82.4 million on October 16 and $228.4 million across the week.

## Power law and network

Bitcoin held its line while the equities attached to it broke. The $81,500 close sits above the $80,000 marker, and CoinGecko shows $81,486 at the pull, down 0.5% on the day and 1.4% on the week. Cycle position reads 0.1096 and MVRV 1.51.

Thursday's retarget lifted difficulty 5.92% to 140.58 trillion, short of the 6.12% estimate, and CoinWarz estimates another 7.49% on October 29 with blocks arriving every 9 minutes 18 seconds. The box reads hashrate at 1,009.5 exahash per second, up 15.5% over thirty days. Block 971,770 puts cycle four at 62.7% complete, 78,230 blocks from the halving.

![btc price and power law bands panel](https://bitcoinhashpoint.com/content/panels/2026-10-17/btc-price-and-power-law-bands-084af12d.png)

Bitcoin closed at $81,500, 1.2406 times the $65,692 floor and 0.5211 times the $156,409 median.

![on chain network state hashrate over time panel](https://bitcoinhashpoint.com/content/panels/2026-10-17/on-chain-network-state-hashrate-over-time-749c248d.png)

Difficulty rose 5.92% to 140.58 trillion and CoinWarz estimates 7.49% more on October 29.

## The Daily Experiment

This is the Hashpoint's own experiment, run each morning on the box's own data. If STRC keeps the last ten sessions' pace of minus 16.9 cents a session, it never reaches par, and the escalator rule reads the next rate at 12.25% against the 12.00% declared (as of the October 16 close).

Yesterday the pace read plus three tenths of a cent and 157 sessions to par. For the if-clause to fail, the preferred needs to recover the $1.81 it lost Friday while the ten-year holds near 5.09%, which would point the move at MSCI and the common rather than the curve. The yield-shock scenario backs that reading from the other side: the ninety-day link between the ten-year and Bitcoin is weak, with an r-squared of 0.039 across 63 sessions.

| Scenario | If | Then | Since yesterday |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| STRC to par | Pace holds at -$0.169 a session | Never reaches par; rule | |
| reads 12.25% | Was +$0.003 and 157 sessions | | |
| Yield shock | 10-year rises 25 bp | BTC -2.35%, r-squared 0.039, n 63 | |
| 10-year input 5.09% from 5.10% | | | |
| Power-law clock | BTC holds $81,500 | Floor meets price June 19, 2027, | |
| 246 days | About 9 days nearer on a $631 lower close | | |
| ETF absorption | 30-day pace holds | 979 BTC a day, 2.18x issuance, 102 | |
| days to 100,000 | Was 850, 1.89x, 118 days | | |
| Strategy cushion | BTC at $81,500 | 8.0% above cost; halves at $78,475 | |
| Down from about 8.9% | | | |
| Theory drift | BTC flat 90 days | Family median $102,527, gap -20.5% | |
| Was $102,341 and -19.75%, same models | | | |

The absorption gain comes from the window, not the tape: the box's thirty-day sum through October 15 dropped a $295.9 million redemption, while Friday's $82.4 million outflow has not entered it yet.

![daily experiment panel](https://bitcoinhashpoint.com/content/panels/2026-10-17/daily-experiment-6d3359a1.png)

At the last ten sessions' pace of minus 16.9 cents, STRC never reaches par, and the escalator rule reads 12.25% against the 12.00% declared.

## The Bull View

- Bitcoin.com: Bitcoin held near $81,434 while Strategy, MARA, Riot and Coinbase fell between 5.8% and 11.5%

- Rio Times: Bitcoin lost 0.61% on the week against a 4.5% weekly loss in the Nasdaq

- The Coin Republic: Cantor Fitzgerald lifted its Strategy target to $208 from $186 and its 12-month Bitcoin assumption to $112,000

- CoinDesk: October hike odds fell to 15% from nearly 45% after Warsh declined to preview the meeting

- Trading Economics: the dollar index fell to 101.6, a two-week low, ending three weekly gains

- CoinDesk: Binance's Catherine Chen called the CPI selloff "a sentiment shock, not a structural break"

The bull case leans on relative strength: the coin gave up less than one percent on a day its listed proxies lost up to 11.5%.

## The Bear View

- CoinDesk: MSCI finalized rules that flag Strategy, Metaplanet and Yellow Cake, with the list due November 11 and removals after the November 30 close

- Bitcoin.com: Strategy fell 9.56% to $136.83 and STRC fell to $97.72, its lowest close since September 16

- Farside Investors: spot funds redeemed $82.4 million on Friday, led by IBIT at $71.8 million

- Yahoo Finance: the Nasdaq fell 2.14% and the VIX jumped about 21% to 19.99

- CoinDesk: Goldman Sachs counts AI-related high-yield spreads 25 basis points wider this week

- Trading Economics: Cleveland Fed President Hammack warned of faster hikes if inflation expectations slip, with December hike odds near 77%

The bear case leans on plumbing: JPMorgan's $2.8 billion passive-selling estimate targets the equity that funds both coin purchases and STRC repairs.

## The Hashpoint read

Two prices diverged on Friday, and the spring sits between them. Bitcoin closed at 1.2406 times its floor and 0.5211 times its median. The instrument built to finance its accumulation closed $2.28 under par hours after its issuer fixed November's coupon on a $99.53 print.

The bulls read the coin correctly: a 0.77% decline against a 9.56% drop in the common says holders of the asset did not sell with holders of its proxies. They overstate the support. The funds redeemed $228.4 million on the week, and the box's clock puts a flat price on the rising floor in 246 days.

The bears read the plumbing correctly and the calendar loosely. MSCI's rule hits the equity that pays for the buyback, but existing constituents generally need two annual periods of failure, and Strategy counts index funds at 3.1% of basic shares, so November 30 opens a process.

The thesis takes a split verdict. The capital-pull half explained nothing on Friday: the ten-year sat at 5.09% and the ninety-day link reads weak. The escalator half lost a round when Strategy held 12.00% against its rule's 12.25%. The lag half won outright, with a coupon fixed for thirty days on a price that lasted one session.

Three markers carry into Monday. The first is $97.07, the September 16 close: a close under it before November 1 says MSCI repriced the instrument itself, and a return above $99.00 says Friday priced the common's bad day and nothing more. The second is Monday's filing: at $136.83 each common share sold raises 9.6% less than at Thursday's $151.29, so a week of STRC repurchases at the old pace says the buyback outranks dilution, and a week without them says the equity window has started to close on the preferred. The third is $80,000 on a close.
